Celtic 1-1 Rangers: Alfredo Morelos scores first Old Firm goal to keep unbeaten season on track

Alfredo Morelos scored his first ever Old Firm goal as champions Rangers came from behind to draw with Celtic and remain unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers, who were playing their first league game since being crowned champions for the first time in 10 years earlier this month, fell behind when Mohamed Elyounoussi opened the scoring.

Steven Gerrard’s side hit back before half-time, though, with Morelos scoring his first derby goal in his 13th Old Firm game.

Celtic dominated large parts of the match and will be disappointed to not claim the win that would’ve ended Rangers unbeaten league season.

The visitors goalkeeper, however, Allan McGregor was in fine form and kept Celtic at bay all afternoon.

After a quiet start, the game burst into life when Elyounoussi fired Celtic in front on 23 minutes. Odsonne Edouard got down the left and his cross was emphatically headed home by the Norwegian diving forward to meet the ball.

From there, Celtic began to dominate proceedings and minutes later they thought they should have had a penalty when Borna Barisic slid in and Edouard went down. The Frenchman, however, was booked for diving.

Rangers then got back on level terms seven minutes before the break as Morelos headed home at the back post for his first ever Old Firm goal.

Both sides could’ve taken the lead before the break, but McGregor stayed big to deny Edouard and Scott Bain dived full stretch to keep out Ryan Kent’s volley.

Celtic continued to attack following the interval and once again McGregor had to be on hand to deny Edouard.

The hosts were having the better of the game but, with 20 minutes to go, they were still locked on level terms.

That was largely down to McGregor, who time and time again denied Celtic the chance to take the lead as Rangers held on for a point.
