Cellphone ring helps police nab robbery suspects

Jan. 17--A Cook County judge set bail at $450,000 each for two South Side men accused of trying to rob the same pizza deliveryman they'd allegedly robbed the month before, officials said.

Anthony E. Sutherland, 21, of the 6700 block of South Chappel Avenue and Derrick J. Ewing, 20, of the 8000 block of South Kingston Avenue, who were each charged with attempted armed robbery, appeared Friday before Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. Ewing was additionally charged with armed robbery, police said.

On Dec. 5, in the 2700 block of East 93rd Street, the suspects tried to rob a pizza deliveryman of pizzas and cash by threatening him with a 4-inch folding knife and pepper spray, according to court documents.

The suspects managed to get away, but on Wednesday, police responded to De Arcos Pizza at 2832 E. 87th St. after the same victim told officers he was robbed in early December by someone using the same phone number that had just been used to place an order, according to a police report.

After being alerted, police set up surveillance and went with the victim to deliver the food in the 9200 block of South Manistee Avenue, police said.

As police saw the suspects approach the victim, officers began to try and interview Ewing and Sutherland. The victim then called the number used from the incident in December, and a phone started to ring in Ewing's pocket, the report said.

The victim identified Ewing, who told police the plan was to meet the deliveryman, "rush him'' and then "snatch'' the food and all his money, police said.

Sutherland was armed with a cutting instrument, while Ewing had peppery spray, prosecutors said.

Cook County public defender Todd Chatman said both men live with their mothers and are lifelong residents of Cook County. Ewing works as a cashier at Wal-Mart.

Sutherland was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of traffic in May 2012.

The men are slated to appear in court again Wednesday.
