Cellphone Data Raises Questions In Georgia Election Interference Case

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis testifies during a hearing on the Georgia election interference case, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, in Atlanta. The hearing is to determine whether Willis should

Cellphone location data revealed in a recent court filing has cast doubt on the testimony provided by a special prosecutor involved in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The data, disclosed by Trump's attorneys, indicates that the prosecutor had visited the neighborhood where Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis resided numerous times in 2021, contradicting his earlier statements.

The investigator's report highlighted that the special prosecutor had visited the area where Willis lived at least 35 times in the first 11 months of 2021, despite testifying that he had been there fewer than 10 times before being appointed in November 2021. This development has prompted concerns about the timeline of the relationship between Willis and the prosecutor, with Trump and other defendants arguing for the removal of both prosecutors due to a perceived conflict of interest.

During a recent hearing, the special prosecutor acknowledged discrepancies in his previous statements regarding his visits to Willis' residence. The investigator's findings also indicated instances where the prosecutor's phone remained in the vicinity of Willis' home overnight, contrary to his earlier claims of not spending the night there.

Furthermore, allegations have surfaced suggesting that the special prosecutor received substantial payments from Willis for his services, leading to personal benefits such as funding vacations. Testimony from a former associate of Willis indicated witnessing intimate interactions between the two before the prosecutor's appointment.

The court proceedings have shed light on the nature of the relationship between Willis and the special prosecutor, with both parties asserting that their romantic involvement only began in 2022, after the prosecutor had assumed his role. They maintained that shared travel expenses were reimbursed in cash.

An analysis of cellphone data conducted by an investigator revealed a significant volume of voice calls and interactions between Willis and the special prosecutor in 2021, predominantly during evening hours. The report utilized geolocation technology to track the prosecutor's phone activity near Willis' residence, identifying over 2,000 voice calls and nearly 12,000 interactions between the two individuals.

The court is set to deliberate on motions to disqualify Willis and her office from the case on March 1, following a two-day evidentiary hearing. The revelations from the cellphone data analysis have added complexity to the legal proceedings surrounding the Georgia election interference case.
