Cell C Sharks v Lions going ahead as last-minute tests return negative results

The Lions' first midweek clash against the Cell C Sharks will go ahead after last-minute Covid tests returned negative results.

The match was thrown into doubt earlier on Wednesday when an unnamed member of the British and Irish Lions' management team tested positive for Covid-19, with four more close contacts - including two players - also self-isolating at the team hotel.

As a consequence, the Lions were left waiting on the results of further coronavirus tests with all members of the touring party isolating in their hotel rooms.

And now, less than two hours before kick-off, the Lions have confirmed that those last-minute screenings have returned negative results - meaning the game can go ahead.

The players are understood to have been stuck in their rooms for most of the day, unaware of how things would play out as the decision to play on got increasingly close to the wire.

It has since been confirmed that Friday night's South Africa v Georgia match has been cancelled due to Covid infections in both camps.

The unnamed member of management who tested positive and four close contacts - including two players and two members of staff - are self-isolating and being assessed at the team hotel in South Africa after the positive lateral flow test as part of the tour's screening programme earlier on Wednesday.
