Celebs rally around Covid-stricken Captain Tom Moore over Barbados trip backlash

A host of celebrities have joined together to defend Captain Sir Tom Moore over his Barbados trip during the holidays.

National hero Captain Tom, who became a household name when he raised more than £30 million for the NHS, has been criticised over a family trip to Barbados in December - despite the trip being totally legal.

Capt Tom's daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, yesterday shared that her father is being treated at Bedford Hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

Some have voiced criticism of Capt Tom - even though his trip is understood to have not broken any lockdown rules in place at the time - and a group of big names have joined forces to defend the hero as he continues to fight the bug.

Capt Tom lives in Bedfordshire, which was under a Tier 2 lockdown at the time, meaning he broke no rules by travelling to Barbados, which was in a travel corridor for the UK.

This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield sent well wishes to him from the show, and in a conversation with broadcasters Jeremy Wright and Julia Hartley-Brewer, all four emphasised that Captain Tom's journey to Barbados did not clash with any Covid rules at the time.

"I was stunned to see some trolls on social media saying: 'Oh, if he didn't go to Barbados!'" Julia shared.

"He went on a lovely, warm, perfectly legal Caribbean holiday with his family, and I think that's absolutely wonderful he did that and nothing whatsoever to do with his ailments now.

"I do think the trolls need to take a day off."

Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan - whose affection for Capt Tom is well known - also tweeted a rebuff to critics in a heartfelt message.

He penned: "Captain Tom, currently battling covid in hospital, is being attacked on here for going to Barbados with his family when it was perfectly legal to do so & he was offered a trip as thanks for raising £39 million for the NHS.

"He helped save Britain in WW2, his trolls shame Britain."

Piers' eldest son Spencer echoed the sentiment.

Coronation Street star and Loose Women panellist Denise Welch tweeted soon after: "Omg!! Capt Tom went to Barbados. You were legally allowed to go. Stringent tests were required. He's 100. He's allowed to do what he bloody well likes within the law. STOP JUDGING EVERONE FFS!!!"

The announcement yesterday that Capt Tom is in the hospital sparked a flood of kind-hearted messages his way.

It even drew the attention of Boris Johnson, who said that Capt Tom had "inspired the whole nation."

Celebrities such as Peter Andre, Katherine Jenkins, Amanda Holden and Michael Ball to name but a few have also penned messages to Capt Tom.
