Celebrity version of The Traitors is 'natural next step' following BBC show's debut success

The BBC is said to be planning a celebrity edition of The Traitors after the hit series wrapped up this week with a dramatic finale.

The murder mystery show, which centres around two groups with some cast as 'traitors' and others as 'faithfuls' pitting their wits against each other, has had viewers gripped from the off. And now, following a tense conclusion in Thursday's last episode, the BBC is said to be planning a celebrity version.

According to The Mirror, famous fans are already lining up to take part in a star-studded edition. It reported an insider as saying: “Everyone’s been thrilled with how much love there’s been for The Traitors and a celebrity version is a natural next step.

“Viewers will get to see different sides of some big names as they try to manipulate others or uncover the truth about fellow players.” It added that show host Claudia Winkleman has already picked a panel for the star show, which is likely to be a fundraiser for Children in Need or Comic Relief, saying: “Victoria Coren, Kirsty Young, Adam Woodyatt, Stephen Fry, Alison Hammond… let’s do that.”

The report added that hopefuls include presenter Rylan Clark, Loose Women’s Judi Love, DJ Greg James and Coronation Street's Sally Ann Matthews. Radio 2 presenter Richie Anderson is said to be another fan of the show - whose viewing figures hit 3.7 million and 17 million views on iPlayer - while during the series' run actress Kathy Burke backed contestant Wilf Webster after his betrayal of fellow traitor Amanda Lovett.

The series, set in a Scottish castle, has faithfuls trying to work out who are traitors among them. They work together to complete challenges and build up a prize pot and have to players leave if they are banished during a group vote or are 'murdered' by the traitors.

The cash is split among remaining faithfuls unless they fail to spot the last traitors who can then win and take all the money. In Thursday's finale, faithfuls Aaron Evans, Hannah Byczkowski and Meryl Williams succeeded and shared £100,000.
