Gyles Brandreth was watching the TV with his friend Maureen Lipman when he asked her what she thought of his sunglasses.
"The shades are very Jack Nicholson yeah," Maureen says gamely, to which Gyles responds: "I was feeling they were more Tom Cruise."
Then he revealed the reason why his fashionable shades were necessary.
As he reveals a big shiner on his right eye, Maureen gasps: "Oh my God."
