Celebrity TV cook Poh Ling Yeow has been selected to join the Australia-ASEAN Council board. (AAP)

Celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow has been appointed to the Australian board of an international relations council.

Yeow, who shot to fame after finishing second on the debut MasterChef Australia series in 2009, has been selected to join the Australia-ASEAN Council board.

The chef, artist, television presenter and writer will be joined by University of Tasmania social sciences head Nicholas Farrelly.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said the pair would bring "new perspectives" to the council, designed to foster networks between people and institutions in Australia and the south-east Asian region.

"South-east Asia has profound strategic and economic significance for Australia," Ms Payne said in a statement on Tuesday.
