Celebrities have rallied round Mandy Moore after she stepped forward to accuse ex-husband Ryan Adams of psychological abuse.

Actress and singer Moore, who married Adams in 2009, claimed he was psychologically abusive toward her throughout their marriage. Their divorce was official in 2016.

It is also claimed that the 44-year-old singer-songwriter offered to help young women with their music careers but then turned things sexual, and sometimes became emotional and verbally abusive.

Adams has denied the allegations.

Stars rushed to support Moore and others who shared their stories with the New York Times this week with Moore “liking” a barrage of tweets about the article.

Sharing the article, Mistresses actress Alyssa Milano wrote: “Thank you to these women for being brave and holding him accountable for his abuses of power.”

Singer Vanessa Carlton said: “Thank you to Mandy, Phoebe, Courtney and others for speaking out. This is an important article. This also cracks the door on more like him in our industry. There are more. Thank you to the @nytimes for continuing these important reveals. We're all fed up.”

Sarah Silverman also sent love to Moore after the article was first published while celebrities including Busy Philipps and author Roxane Gay expressed disappointment in Adams and vowed to delete his music.

Fans also used social media to send support to Moore and the other survivors who recounted their experiences.

Adams, who has released 16 albums and won 7 Grammy nominations, admitted he was “not a perfect man” but denied the allegations as “extremely serious and outlandish accusations”.

In a tweet, he added: “I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes. To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologise deeply and unreservedly.

“But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage.

“As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly. I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”

Andrew Brettler, an attorney for Adams, told the newspaper that the singer “unequivocally denies that he ever engaged in inappropriate online sexual communications with someone he knew was underage.”
