Celebrities quiz the Pope about homophobia - and his response moves them to tears

Celebs openly wept after quizzing the Pope about the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality.

Gay comedian Stephen K Amos and ex-Strictly star Brendan Cole had only agreed to meet Pope Francis if they could raise the issue.

But the pair, filming a BBC reality show, were taken aback by the pontiff, whose past remarks have been labelled by some as homophobic.

Stephen, 51, said: “I expected a stock response from the Pope. His response 1,000% floored me. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. It was a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

Brendan, 42, added: “We got to ask fairly direct questions about certain things... and the outcome was ridiculously surprising. Stephen’s question was a powerful moment.”

The celebs were in a team of eight stars – including comedian Les Dennis and actress Lesley Joseph – trekking part of the 620-mile Italian section of a pilgrim route for Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome.

The Pope has said homosexuality in the priesthood “worries me”. But in 2016 he said the Catholic Church should apologise to gay people for its treatment of them.

The three-part series shows the Papal meeting and starts on Friday at 9pm on BBC2.
