Celebrities pitch in to help Airdrie Community Trust

THE stars arrived in Airdrie for the annual All-Stars and legends charity cup clash.

This year the big names descended on the Penny Cars Stadium in aid of the Airdrie Community Trust.

The North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band played the participants onto the pitch with the likes of Still Game favourite Sanjeev Kohli, wrestling superstar Grado and Line of Duty and Still Game actor Scott Reid lining up.

Former football stars including Alex Neil, Owen Coyle, Jose Quitongo, Sandy Stewart, Willie McGuire, Brian McPhee, Stephen Murray and Bryan Prunty also tried to lift the community cup.

Former Rangers man Gordon Smith managed the All-Stars, and lifted the trophy after a win against former Airdrie manager and chairman Bobby Watson’s side.

The cash raised will go towards the Airdrie Community Trust and free season tickets for kids next season at the Diamonds.

Actor Scott Reid said: “It’s great to see the football club and the Community Trust are able to work together and move forward.

“They can make Airdrie a sporting home; and make people from all areas come along and get involved.

“Airdrie are trying to build something that is family and community-based.”

Still Game co-star Sanjeev Kohli praised the work of organiser Ross Owen.

He told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser: “Ross seems to be the most well-connected man in Scotland – and possibly the world!

“He’s a really positive force, and when he approached me to play I was happy to do it. There is kind of nothing to lose for the celebrities.”

Marvin Andrews also enjoyed kitting up again, adding: “I’m a football man. I’ve retired from the professional game, but playing in games like this makes it feel like you are still playing.

“There is good fun and always a bit of dressing room banter with ex-players, and mixing with TV superstars.

“The main enjoyment of it, for me, is helping somebody else.”

Organiser Ross Owen was delighted as around 600 punters came through the gates at New Broomfield.

“I‘m absolutely delighted with the response to this year’s charity match.

“The pre-match entertainment was well received with local acts and stars of The Voice UK and The Voice Kids UK taking part.

“I wish Airdrie Community Trust all the best with future developments and projects.

“Along with other good causes close to my heart, they will continue to have my support for the good work they have planned going forward.”

He added: “I’ll definitely do something again next year in aid of a few local charities.

“I’m looking at putting together a Scotland Celebrities V England Celebrities game. Watch this space!”
