Celebratory event will mark community buy over of Viewpark Glen

Viewpark Conservation Group will hold an event to celebrate Community Land Week this Saturday, October 16.

The group succeeded in taking ownership of the former Douglas Support Estate in Lanarkshire - opening up an area for use by the local community to enjoy the great outdoors back in August 2020.

Now they will plant an oak tree to celebrate successfully completing the community buy out of the 171 acres thanks in part to a £512,000 from the Scottish Land Fund.

Grace McNeill, chair of Viewpark Conservation Group said: "During Covid we have seen an increase in people spending time in the great outdoors.

"The Glen is popular with walkers, cyclists and anglers of all ages and there are ambitious plans to develop a visitor and interpretation centre in a disused farmhouse on the land. We are also looking to develop a heritage orchard.

"We are very excited to be celebrating this years Community Land Week where we will plant an oak tree day and a meet our new community ranger, Mark Perry."

Chair of the Scottish Land Fund, Cara Gillespie, added: "The Scottish Land Fund has long been a supporter of Community Land Week - a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all things community ownership.

"This year 10 resilient projects, all of which have received Scottish Land Fund backing, will open their doors to the public.

"This is a chance to hear first-hand about the challenges and opportunities ownership brings but even more so a chance to celebrate the power of collective community action.

"This week of celebration, which runs until Sunday, is justly deserved."

Community Land Scotland was set up in 2010 to influence policy to make it easier for communities to buy land, to help its members share knowledge and information, and to encourage communities to consider landownership.

The event will run from 10am to 4pm at the former Douglas Support Estate, Viewpark Glen.
