Celebrations galore as Hamilton man turns 100 years old

A Hamilton man has celebrated a major milestone with his family and friends after turning 100-years-old.

John Hamilton enjoyed a very special few days, including a trip to Wemyss Bay, as he marked his one hundredth year with several different parties.

Born in Miller Street, Hamilton, on November 26, 1922, John has resided in the town all of his life attending Woodside Primary School before taking up a five year apprenticeship and training to be a joiner with J.C Burns in Quarry Place after leaving secondary school.

In 1939, at just 17-years-old he was called up to the RAF to serve for his country, where he worked as a maintenance worker in carpentry, repairing wooden airplanes known as the Mosquitoes.

After his release from the RAF, John married May Hamilton in 1949 and the couple went on to have sons John, Tom and Graham and daughter Sheena. Sadly, his wife May passed away in April 2002 after 50 years of marriage.

Attending Low Waters Gospel Hall all his days, John also worked at Ravenscraig Steelworks and with the Council over the years as well as enjoying several hobbies including learning the computer, making jewellery and attending an art class.

Nowadays, John enjoys spending time with his family, his five grandkids and four great grandchildren and his many friends within Deer Park Place, where he has lived for some time now including with his brother William until his death six years ago.

His proud daughter Jean Brown said: "My dad had a wonderful time turning 100 years old. He came down to stay with us in Wemyss Bay where all the family came along for a celebration and he loved seeing everyone again, as well as then enjoying a party at his local church and at the sheltered housing complex! He's certainly has his fair share of celebrating to do over the last few weeks.

"Dad has thoroughly enjoyed turning 100 and he was delighted to receive his card from King Charles, which is now in a special frame so he can show it off to everyone with a big smile on his face."
