Celebrations as Nottingham Trent wins national University of the Year title

Nottingham Trent University has been named "University of the Year" by The Guardian newspaper in recognition of its teaching quality and graduate employment rates.

The title adds to NTU's growing list of achievements after it was awarded the Times Higher Education University of the Year 2017 and the Times and Sunday Times Modern University of the Year 2018.

It has come as the university jumped to 16th place - up 18 - in The Guardian's 2019 university guide, with this national table focusing on areas including teaching and student satisfaction.

The award itself is based on an institution's performance and improvement, as well as retention of students from low-participation areas and the attainment of BME students.

Nottingham Trent University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Peck, said: "I want to thank The Guardian for recognising the achievements of NTU over recent years.

Number of people in work in Nottingham falls by more than 13,000 in just two years, latest figures show

"My colleagues and our students set out our shared ambitions and challenging objectives back in 2015 and we have all worked incredibly hard to deliver these."

University representatives accepted the title at the Guardian University Awards in London last night, April 10.

But it was not the only award they received, as NTU won the course and curriculum design category at the event for its SCALE-UP project.

This is an approach to teaching which moves away from the traditional lecture theatre style and encourages students and lecturers to work together in a 'roundtable' environment.

According to the university, this has given all students a greater chance of gaining a 'good' degree, while the attainment gap for BME students has also been reduced as a result.

Guardian University Guide editor, Judy Friedberg, said: “Nottingham Trent's performance across a range of measures has been exceptional this year.

"The university delivers overall academic excellence while paying close attention to the success of each individual student, no matter their background.”

In addition to this award and previous university of the year gongs, NTU has also been rated Gold in the Government's Teaching Excellence Framework, an assessment of a university's teaching and how well it ensures success for students. Gold is the highest possibleranking.
