Celebrating Stanley Baxter as giant of Scots comedy turns 95

Scots comedy giant Stanley Baxter is celebrating his 95th birthday on 24 May and we thought it would be a good opportunity to celebrate the life of the man who brought us 'Parliamo Glasgow' as well as a whole host of comedy moments.

Stanley who was born in Fergus Drive and made his debut at the Glasgow Citizen theatre now lives in London.

He first performed aged six doing impersonations of Laurel and Hardy, and Mae West, dressed in a sailor suit while his mum Bessie played piano.

He also served with the Seaforth Highlanders and became pals with Carry On Star Kenneth Williams when he auditioned to be part of the Combined Services Entertainment unit [CSE].

Stanley who came out as gay last year, had his own Bafta award winning series and regularly appeared in panto.

He is much loved for his Glasgow patois including the now famous 'Izat a marra on yer barra, Clara?” (“Is that a marrow on your barrow, Clara?”)'.

As one of Britain's most outrageous performers, his singing and dancing MGM musical style sketches on the BBC were legendary and he also starred in ITV's The Stanley Baxter Picture Show.

Stanley may also have been the first TV comedian to impersonate the Queen with his silk gloves and tiara, as he announced himself as the Duchess of Brendagh and delivered a Christmas message that spoke of the Queen Mum as a priceless antique.

He later went on to star in a much loved children's series Mr Majeika, about a wizard schoolteacher who is actually a wizard.

We hope Stanley has a great birthday and haves as many laughs as he's given Scotland over the years.
