Celebrating European Cup 40th anniversary 'not about dwelling on the past' says Nottingham Forest legend

Plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nottingham Forest's first European Cup win have drawn some surprising criticism.

There are some, far from all, but some people who say we should not live in the past and not keep dredging up former glories.

I don't get that - and not just because I played against Malmo in 1979.

It's part of your history. It's not a case of saying current players must emulate this.

When big numbers ending with zero come up, you celebrate landmarks.

Every club celebrates big anniversaries, especially while the players who won the trophies are still alive.

Winning that game did so much for Nottingham. It put us on the world map.

You can't get away from that.

Personally, it didn't change my life a lot. I was born and bred here. I kept the same friends and they would have told me if I was being big headed.

It was a privilege to go from being raised on a council estate to being part of what Brian Clough and Peter Taylor came to do at Forest.

My own kids never really bought into what I did in my career. I got a call one night from my daughters years ago before they were both married.

They'd watched a show when there was nothing else on about Forest and they rang me just saying 'blimey, you lot weren't bad.'

Winning the European Cup is something we've never gone to town on, but it's nice people remember the good times of the club.

Jose Mourinho came here once because he wanted to see how a club of Forest's size had won the European Cup twice in a row.

People can't believe it happened. You should recognise that and learn about it.

History is so important, especially when you are learning about politics and war. Sport is different of course, but you should learn about what went before you.

It's not about dwelling. We all want the club to move forwards, we want the club to get in the Premier League.

The past is the past. You can't change it. Some of it is bad, some of it is good. Why not celebrate what was good at the right times?
