We bring you a special edition of The Debate on Josephine Baker's induction into the Panthéon in Paris. The Missouri-born dancer, who was also a spy for the French during the Second World War and a civil rights activist, is being honoured in the final resting place of France's most celebrated citizens.
Among those attending the ceremony were members of her family, along with French politicians including President Emmanuel Macron and fellow artists. A coffin carrying soil from the US, France and Monaco, places where Baker made her mark, was deposited inside the monument.
Her body will stay in Monaco, at the request of her family. In Paris, the singer-dancer turned World War II hero and civil rights activist has made history by becoming the first person of colour to enter the Panthéon, France's most hallowed resting place. Baker will lie alongside the great and good of French history; the likes of Voltaire and Victor Hugo.
Our guests discuss Josephine Baker's legacy and what it means for contemporary French society.
