MIAMI — Mexican cinema will take center stage this August as Cinelatino celebrates National Mexican Cinema Day with a weeklong programming event featuring 14 films that span decades of storytelling, from beloved Golden Age classics to award-winning contemporary dramas.
Running Aug. 10 through Aug. 16, the Cinelatino special lineup honors more than a century of Mexican filmmaking, showcasing stories that explore romance, comedy, action, social issues and family drama. The celebration culminates on Aug. 15, National Mexican Cinema Day, with a marathon featuring all 14 films.
The curated selection highlights some of Mexico's most recognizable actors, including Gael García Bernal, Damián Alcázar, Joaquín Cosío, Ana Claudia Talancón, Angélica Aragón, Arcelia Ramírez, Omar Chaparro, Martha Higareda and legendary comedian Mario Moreno "Cantinflas."
Among the most acclaimed titles is The Crime of Father Amaro (El crimen del Padre Amaro), the controversial Academy Award-nominated drama starring Gael García Bernal as a young priest whose forbidden romance with a parishioner exposes corruption and hypocrisy within the Catholic Church. The 2002 film remains one of the most talked-about works in modern Mexican cinema.
Comedy fans can revisit No Manches Frida, the box office hit starring Omar Chaparro and Martha Higareda. The film follows an ex-convict forced to pose as a teacher while searching for stolen money hidden beneath a school, resulting in a series of chaotic and heartfelt moments that helped turn the movie into one of Mexico's biggest comedy franchises.
The lineup also pays tribute to the country's cinematic roots with Ahí está el detalle, widely regarded as one of Cantinflas' greatest performances. Released in 1940, the comedy established the beloved actor as one of Latin America's most influential comedians thanks to his trademark wordplay and satirical humor.
Recent critically acclaimed films are also featured, including La Civil, starring Arcelia Ramírez in a powerful performance as a mother determined to find her kidnapped daughter after authorities fail to act. Inspired by real events, the film earned international praise for its portrayal of violence and resilience in contemporary Mexico.
Another modern classic is El Infierno, director Luis Estrada's sharp dark comedy starring Damián Alcázar and Joaquín Cosío. Set against the backdrop of Mexico's drug war, the film uses biting satire to examine organized crime, corruption and the social consequences of violence.
The schedule also includes La Delgada Línea Amarilla, a heartfelt road drama about five highway workers painting a yellow centerline across a remote stretch of road, where an ordinary job becomes a journey of friendship and self-discovery.
In Tequila: Historia de una Pasión, audiences are transported to the birthplace of Mexico's signature spirit through a period drama centered on love, family traditions and the cultural legacy behind tequila production.
Western fans can enjoy El Pistolero, an action-filled tale of revenge and justice, while Soy de Rancho delivers a lighthearted comedy celebrating rural Mexican life, family values and the clash between tradition and modernity.
The emotional drama Paraíso Perdido explores themes of redemption, forgiveness and second chances through interconnected lives shaped by difficult choices, while Bendita Suegra offers laughs with its story of family tensions and the often complicated relationship between newlyweds and an overbearing mother-in-law.
The lineup continues with El Ejecutor, an action thriller centered on vengeance and moral dilemmas, and La Princesa, a dramatic story that examines ambition, identity and the pursuit of personal freedom. Rounding out the collection is Trigal, an intimate coming-of-age drama that explores adolescence, family dynamics and first love in rural Mexico.
The films will air nightly in prime time beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, with two features scheduled each evening before the all-day marathon on Aug. 15. The celebration concludes on Aug. 16 with La Civil and El Infierno.
