If you live in a hot climate, or any unpredictable climate really, a ceiling fan can be a blessing. However, historically, they haven't been the chicest design feature in a room. At best, they can be very utilitarian and boring, and worst, just straight up ugly. Why is it that ceiling lights come in all manner of chic shapes and sizes, but for so long, ceiling fans didn't get the same treatment?
Luckily, design-led brands are only increasing the range of chic and sleek ceiling fans available, making it easier to keep a room cool, and not add an eyesore. Bye-bye white plastic eye-sore, hello chic rattan fixtures.
The key to styling a ceiling fan is making it feel seamless within a scheme. Matching it with other fixtures, like lighting or hardware, will ensure it has a place within a room and doesn't dominate.
'When it comes to ceiling fans, one MUST consider it to be within the same category as the surrounding decorative light fixtures,' explains interior designer Katelyn Gilmour, founder of KBG Design. 'You want to coordinate their finishes and style whenever possible. And if there are no other decorative fixtures in the space, pretend that the fan is the acting chandelier and echo other light fixture finishes or lighting styles from elsewhere in your home.'
'In this living room space (pictured above), we first sourced the transitional surface-mounted sconce fixtures seen on the built-ins, which feature a mixture of metal finishes: matte black with satin brass,' explains Katelyn. 'We then knew we wanted the fan to have similar characteristics and, ideally, mixed metals. Alternatively, I would have settled for one of the finishes individually, but the mixture of metals is always a win! The cleaner lines of the fan echo this home’s aesthetic, making it a beautiful contribution aesthetically and functionally to the space.'
'We selected this ceiling fan for its clean, understated profile and sculptural quality,' explains architect Risa Boyer regarding the bedroom pictured above. 'Rather than reading as a purely utilitarian element, it functions as an integrated design feature that complements the architecture and interiors. The natural materiality and simple form align with the palette of the space, while also supporting comfort and airflow in a way that feels appropriate to the home’s performance goals.'
'A ceiling fan tends to feel most seamless when treated as part of the overall composition rather than as an afterthought,' says Risa. 'We typically look for a fan that echoes the room’s materials, tones, or geometry – whether through wood finishes, matte metals, or minimal forms. Scale is also important; the fan should suit the room's proportions without dominating it. When thoughtfully selected, a ceiling fan can visually recede or even act as a quiet sculptural element within the space.'
