Cee-Lo Green has said that a 2012 incident which saw him plead no contest to a charge of furnishing a controlled substance was “blown out of proportion”.
While apologising for the incident, which led to his exit from US talent show The Voice, Green told The Steve Harvey Show: “We are human beings and we make mistakes, but I am not my mistakes. I am here, humbled and humanised and with a heartfelt new album that really does address the wisdom and understanding that I got out of the experience. So I’m very fortunate for that.”
In 2014, Green pleaded no contest to the charge, which arose from a 2012 incident in which a woman accused him of slipping ecstasy into her drink. Green caused controversy afterwards by posting a series of tweets reacting to accusations that he had raped the woman. “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously, so WITH implies consent,” said one. Another opined: “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!”
Green was never charged with rape, as prosecutors found the sex to be consensual. The singer said that the pair’s last conversation was on friendly terms: “We both agreed we would like to resume back to real life, it was something that was blown out of proportion. I’m not even at liberty to be so detailed about it, but like I said, it was amicable.”
Green recently released his new album, Heart Blanche, on which he attempts to address his recent controversies. The singer completed his court-mandated 360 hours of community service in October 2015, but remains on probation.
