Cedric Soares Arsenal squad number confirmed

Arsenal have confirmed Cedric Soares' squad number after signing the right-back from Southampton on deadline day in the January transfer window.

He will wear the number 17 shirt, a number previously owned by Alex Iwobi, Alexis Sanchez and Nacho Monreal.

The 28-year-old's move to the Gunners was confirmed on the morning of January 31 as an early deal on the final day of the January transfer window.

With his contract at Southampton set to expire in the summer, Arsenal agreed a loan deal with Southampton until the end of the season, after which they would be able to land him on a permanent contract as a free agent, with no transfer fee to be paid.

Cedric is set to be a back up player to Hector Bellerin, who remains first choice at right-back for the north London club.

He is not the only January capture by the Gunners. Pablo Mari was also signed as another player on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo.

The former Manchester City defender is a left-footed centre-back and should add a new dimension to Mikel Arteta's back line.

However, Arsenal fans will have to wait for Cedric's debut. The Portugal international is currently out injured and will not be available to face Burnley, his new club's first opponents following deadline day in the January transfer window.

Speaking after the deal to bring him to the Emirates Stadium was completed, the full-back said: "I am very happy to have signed for Arsenal, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"It is a privilege to join a team with such a rich history, class and loyal supporters. It's great that I have come to north London to be part of this talented squad.

"I will work my hardest and give my all to help Arsenal reach its goals and make all gunners proud!"

Cedric made 138 appearances for Southampton during his four-and-a-half seasons on the south coast.

During that period he scored three goals, finding the back of the net once in each of the last three seasons.

He won his first senior Portugal cap in 2014 and has gone on to represent his country 33 times and scored his one and only goal at international level in the 2017 Confederations Cup against Mexico in a match that ended 2-2.

A runner up at youth level in the Under-20 World Cup, he secured the greatest achievement of his career so far by winning the 2016 European Championship title in France.
