Cedric Itten Rangers switch edges closer as Steven Gerrard eyes another striker

Rangers are edging closer to a second striker signing to follow Kemar Roofe 's arrival in the shape of St Gallen's Cedric Itten.

The Swiss frontman, 23, is fresh from a stellar goalscoring season at the Super League runners-up in his homeland.

Itten bagged 20 goals in 36 games in a run that almost fired his side to the title until a late capitulation to champions Young Boys.

And The Athletic are reporting that Steven Gerrard is close to obtaining his signature in a move that would raise further questions regarding Alfredo Morelos ' future.

Itten was absent in St Gallen's final league game against Young Boys despite no injuries and having picked up a hat-trick in the previous match against Neuchatel Xamax.

Standing at six foot two, he represents more of an aerial threat than new arrival Roofe, and may be in that physical striker mould Lyndon Dykes was once rumoured to be earmarked for.

Morelos is the subject of intense interest from Ligue 1 side Lille.

Reports from France claim he has agreed personal terms with the club but a transfer fee between Rangers and Lille is yet to be resolved.
