Cedric Itten Rangers return confirmed as Gio van Bronckhorst's role in striker recall revealed

Rangers have officially confirmed the return of Cedric Itten from his loan spell at Greuther Furth, as it's revealed Giovanni van Bronckhorst pushed for him to be recalled.

The Swiss striker was loaned out in the summer following the arrival of Fashion Sakala, having managed just six goals in 41 games.

On Wednesday though Jermain Defoe left his role as player-coach, leaving the Premiership champions a man down in attack.

It was immediately reported that Rangers would exercise their option to recall Itten, and a statement confirmed the move a few hours later.

And it's been revealed that new boss Van Bronckhorst was a driving force in bringing the 25-year-old back, having previously been impressed by his ability.

Sporting director Ross Wilson explained: "Gio was aware of Cedric’s profile as a player prior to the confirmation of his appointment as Rangers manager.

"In recent weeks, we have discussed the possibility of bringing Cedric back into the group and following a chat with him at the weekend, we have done just that.

"Clearly Cedric knows the club well, knows what winning here feels like and joins a squad that he is already a popular member of."
