In last week's response to a query from Martin James regarding backups, you suggested using CD-R regularly. I'm surprised that you didn't suggest DVDs, or even a backup to an external (or internal) hard drive.

A CD-R holds 700MB and not many people accumulate data so rapidly that they need the higher capacity of DVD. It works well for documents, which are usually small, and for photos, which don't benefit from compression. (I tend to chuck my mail folders into a WinRAR file.) Also, a write once CD-R rarely goes wrong, in my experience, so it provides an archive that should last for many years. External hard drives are great for continuous backups until you run out of space, but any hard drive can fail.
