CCTV released over grandad's death after thugs torched his house

Police have released images of a man they want to speak to after a man was killed in an arson attack.

George Redmond died after his house, on Dorien Road, Old Swan, was targeted. The 76-year-old was rushed to hospital, with a woman, at around 3.20am on Thursday, September 1, after suffering from smoke inhalation and other injuries.

Merseyside police have confirmed that he remained in hospital for treatment and died 15 days later. A post mortem examination into his death has taken place and police are waiting for the results.

Merseyside fire and rescue service established that the blaze was started deliberately and launched an investigation in collaboration with police. Detectives have issued CCTV images of a man they believe could assist in their investigation.

Detective Inspector Gavin Mucahy said: "Following Mr Redmond’s death, his family are being supported by our specially trained liaison officers. Following a joint investigation with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service we have established that the fire was caused deliberately.

"We have been able to obtain these CCTV images and we understand that they are not the best quality images, but we are appealing for people to come forward if you recognise the male featured in these images. We believe he could hold information that could be vital to our continuing enquiries.

"With this, we would also like people in the surrounding roads around Dorien Road to please check your CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage of anything suspicious in the early of the morning from 3am to 3.45am on 1 September to help us with the investigation so we can bring the offender to justice.

"In addition any witnesses we have not already spoken who were in the area at that time and saw something suspicious to please to contact us. Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information can contact us by DM via our social media desk on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ using reference 22000649658.

"You can also contact the independent charity Crime stoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or via their online form at: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/give-information."
