CCTV released after tools worth £700 stolen from car boot in South Shields

CCTV has been released after tools worth £700 were taken by a thief who broke into a car in South Shields.

A CCTV image has now been released of a man police want to speak to about the theft.

It was reported that a man broke into a parked car on Graham Street between 1.40am and 2am on November 8.

He stole a number of tools and a toolbox from the boot of the car, which is thought to be worth around £700.

An investigation was launched and officers have now identified a man they would like to trace in connection with the theft.

Detective Constable Michael Wilson, of Northumbria Police , said: “We take car-related crime incredibly seriously and understand the effect that this type of criminality can have on victims and the wider community.

“Clearly this is a case that has left the victim at a financial loss. As a result, a team of detectives are working to locate those responsible and we are now asking the public to come forward if they recognise this man or have any information that can assist with our investigation.

“While our inquiries continue in this particular case, I would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the public as we head towards Christmas to be vigilant and work with us to help deter criminals from stealing our belongings.

“Opportunistic thieves often go street-to-street trying car doors, and if the door is locked, they will then just move on to the next vehicle.

“Our message to residents is to please take an extra second to ensure your cars are locked, and make sure any valuables are kept out of sight. If anybody sees anything suspicious, please give us a call.”

Anyone who recognises the man is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 592 111119 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
