CCTV, masks, drones: Is France's 'liberté' under threat?

FRANCE IN FOCUS © FRANCE 24

In this week's show we're putting the focus on how France's response to Covid-19 has threatened the country's founding notion of "liberté" or freedom. Between lockdown, restrictions on freedom of movement, a ban on gatherings and forcibly shuttered shops, individual and collective rights have been dealt some serious setbacks in the name of beating the pandemic.

But the French haven't always swallowed this bitter pill willingly – especially when it comes to medical data. The latest government initiatives include a smartphone tracking app and a state-run database collecting and sharing patient information.

We also see how curfews, extended CCTV coverage and compulsory mask-wearing have all become part of the anti-coronavirus arsenal – with varying degrees of legality.

We end with a report that sees how one business school has made taking part in its remote exams conditional on pupils accepting surveillance!
