CCTV issued by police in hunt for arsonists who set fire to one of Swansea's tallest buildings

Police have issued CCTV in the hunt for the arsonists who scaled one of Swansea's tallest buildings and set it on fire.

South Wales Police are treating the fire at Swansea 's Oldway Centre on Sunday, March 17, as deliberate.

The tower block in High Street is being renovated into student flats and  is covered in scaffolding .

However, flames were seen ripping through the top of the city centre building last month with black smoke rising into the sky.

At the same time, an eyewitness shot footage of two figures descending stairs within the building's scaffolding.

Police are now trying to track down the people in the CCTV footage because they believe they may hold important information.

WRW construction, the company behind the project, has previously said it was working with the emergency services on the investigation into the incident.

Robert Williams, company chairman and project director, said at the time of the fire that it was caused by a group of trespassers that gained access via an emergency exit and went onto the roof, where they set some materials alight.

"The damage caused was minimal due to the quick response of our security services and the emergency services," he continued.

"We are very grateful to the people in the community that made calls to the fire service.

"It could have been a very serious and dangerous incident."

Mr Williams said that, in Oldway Centre, there was 24/7 security and that they also had CCTV and an alarm system in the building. However, he said they would be carrying out their own investigation and review.

He said they were still on target to complete the building by September.

"It is a shame that people feel the need to target something that it is going to help the community," he continued. "We have had such a positive response for turning an old building into quality student accommodation.

"We need to help and educate people as these individuals seem to have a disregard for their own safety and the potential seriousness of what could have been a significant arson.

"It could have had very serious consequences."

The building, close to Swansea train station, is  being turned into a 13-storey  , 556-bed unit for students.
