CCTV footage released after blind people's home burgled in Newcastle

Police have released CCTV footage after a Newcastle home belonging to people who are registered blind was raided by a burglar.

Officers from Northumbria Police launched an investigation after a 30-year-old man reported at 11.40pm on August 6 that someone entered his home in Gishford Way, Blakelaw, and stole two coats, one of which had a purse containing £350 cash and a credit card.

As the victims of the burglary are registered blind, officers are treating the incident as a disability hate crime.

CCTV footage was obtained from the doorbell of the home and police would like to find the male shown on the footage, as it is believed he was in the area at the time of the incident and could have valuable information which can assist officers.

Detective constable Michael Saunders, from Northumbria Police said: “The people who committed this crime have preyed on vulnerable members of the community.

“It’s an awful ordeal to go through having personal belongings stolen let alone knowing the culprits have intruded into your home.

“We are determined to get to the bottom of who is responsible for this and urge anyone with information to get in touch.”

The man, or anyone who knows him, is asked to contact police by ringing 101 or using the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the Northumbria Police website quoting log 1419 of August 6.
