CCTV captures man climbing into girl's bedroom before alleged assault

Police are searching for a man who allegedly assaulted an eight-year-old girl after climbing through her window in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

CCTV footage shows a hooded man climbing through the girl's bedroom window at 2:52am on Monday.

Two minutes later, he can be seen climbing back out, carefully closing the window behind him before fleeing.

Superintendent Karen McCarthy said the home invasion left the family shaken.

"This is a very rare but obviously a very serious incident," she said.

"The family are obviously extremely distressed.

"The young victim and her family have shown extreme courage in coming forward to the police, their welfare is paramount."

Police allege the man broke into the Kingsford home on Barker street and spoke to the child during the assault, but could not confirm if the assault was targeted.

"The particular person did speak briefly to the young victim. The description that we have is that it is a British or Australian accent," she said.

"Police from Eastern Beaches area command have worked through the night and this morning we have gathered together a large amount of police resources from this command and across the central metropolitan region," Superintendent McCarthy said.

She said teams were canvassing the area, including the streets surrounding the property and urged anyone with CCTV footage or information from up to two weeks ago, to come forward.

The man is described as being between 170 and 180 centimetres tall, was wearing a hooded jacket, cargo pants, a hat and was last seen running down Barker street towards McDonalds.
