CCTV captures 'bomb like' explosion that shook houses across Merseyside

Incredible CCTV footage has captured the "bomb like" explosion that shook houses across Merseyside.

Shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday evening, a loud bang and a massive flash was seen for miles around Knowsley.

People as far as Prescot, Rainhill, and St Helens felt their homes shake and witnessed the bright light in the sky that lasted a split second.

Hundreds of people took to social media to ask questions about the explosion they heard with many being left extremely concerned by the incident.

Dozens of calls were made to Merseyside Fie and Rescue and Merseyside Police about the phenomenon that startled neighbours.

Officers and fire crews were sent to Tarbock Road, in Huyton, where people believed the explosion had occurred.

Just metres away, officers and firefighters discovered a bonfire in the middle of Tarbock woods.

According to emergency services, the explosion is believed to have been caused by a group of children throwing gas cannisters or aerosol cans onto the blaze.

While no one was injured in the incident, people in the area were left unnerved by the explosion.

Many also shared footage online that they had captured of it.

One ECHO reader, Samantha Brodrick, shared CCTV video from the front of her home, around a mile from the fire, that captured the explosion.

In the footage, a bright flash can be seen lighting up the sky before a loud rumble or bang can be heard a few seconds later.

She said that it felt like "a bomb had went off".

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service confirmed that one fire engine was sent to the scene in Coney Lane, off Tarbock Road, where a bonfire made up of a quantity of wood had been set alight.

Loud explosion over Huyton

A spokesperson said: "The explosions might have been caused by products being thrown onto the fire."

The fire was extinguished shortly before 10pm.

After the fire was extinguished, images of scorched earth were shared on social media.

Paul Abernethy was just one of the people to take to social media after hearing the explosion.

He said: "Heard a big explosion in Huyton about 20 mins ago, the walls shook and everything.

"Not sure what has happened, hope people are ok."

Joanne Evo also said: "Felt like the walls shake in Huyton. Gas explosion apparently."

Nico added: "Big flash and massive explosion somewhere in Huyton there!

"Hope no one is hurt."
