CCTV captured horror moment careless driver hit little Dublin girl and fled scene as locals plead for speed bumps

A horrific hit-and-run that left a little Dublin girl helpless on the side of the road and in need of treatment in hospital was caught on a nearby CCTV camera.

The five-year-old child, who is understood to be a local, was crossing over from one side of the footpath to the other on the tiny Kildonan Avenue stretch of road in Finglas in her Go Kart when she was struck by a careless driver.

The shameless motorist decided to speed away from the scene instead of checking on the injured kid following the broad daylight hit-and-run incident.

The youngster went from playing in the 20C+ Tuesday heatwave to being rushed to the Children's Hospital on Temple Street all in a matter of seconds.

Fianna Fáil Councillor for Finglas, Glasnevin and Ballymun Keith Connolly told Dublin Live that Gardai now have vital footage in their possession which may help in the manhunt to find the person behind the wheel.

He said: "My understanding is that a neighbour had CCTV footage and they've now passed it onto Gardai who are currently investigating the video."

Kildonan Avenue is a narrow road with lots of family houses either side and is even cut off at one end by a playground.

Because of the heavy presence of children at play in the area, residents have been pleading for speed bumps to be put in place for years - something which sadly could have stopped this collision from happening.

Councillor Connolly added: "Residents in the area have been calling out for speed calming measures and this just shows that their voices need to be heard.

"Their proposals [for speed bumps] have been rejected on numerous occasions by the traffic department - but that needs an urgent review which I will be looking into.

A recent report carried out on the road, taking into account speeding and collision records, determined that the percentage of incidents there over a certain period were too low to match the criteria for ramps.

Councillor Connolly added: "The adjoining roads have speed bumps and Kildonan Avenue needs them too."

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live that an investigation has been launched to find the careless driver behind the wheel of the smash.

He said: "Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 2:45pm on Tuesday 2nd June at Kildonan Avenue, Finglas.
