CCTV appeal after man throws aerosol onto bus in 'shocking' incident in south London

A manhunt has been launched after a passenger set an aerosol can on fire and threw it into a bus in south London.

Scotland Yard said the incident happened around 2.20pm on August 13 after a man boarded the 151 bus with a group of friends at Crown Road bus stop, near Sutton High Street.

The bus driver challenged the group after they failed to tap in and pay. The man then got off the bus, and set an aerosol can alight before throwing it through the driver's window into the bus. He then fled the scene.

The driver was not injured.

Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak with in connection with the incident.

PC Natalie Baynes, of the Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “This was a shocking and quite frankly dangerous incident and I am very pleased the driver did not come to harm. Had the aerosol can exploded, I dread to think how serious the injuries could have been.

"I am looking to speak with anyone who can help us identify the man in this CCTV image. Likewise, if you were on board the bus and witnessed what happened, please do get in touch.”

Police are asking anyone who recognises the man in the image or with any information to call 101 quoting reference 4009478/20.
