A parliamentary committee is to probe the controversial 2018 investigation into the Logan City Council undertaken by Queensland's anti-corruption watchdog, the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).
The Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee (PCCC) late today announced it would probe the CCC investigation in 2018 into former councillors of Logan City, south of Brisbane.
The PCCC, which oversees the CCC operations, said it was launching an inquiry in response to a complaint it had received today.
A PCCC spokesperson said the scope of the inquiry and how it would be conducted would be announced in due course.
The CCC investigation in 2018 led to the council being sacked and seven councillors and former mayor Luke Smith facing fraud charges.
Last month, fraud charges against the seven councillors and Mr Smith were dropped, with the prosecution saying there was insufficient evidence to proceed.
The charges had related to the dismissal of the council's former chief executive officer Sharon Kelsey.
The CCC had alleged the councillors acted dishonestly to cause detriment to Ms Kelsey by terminating her employment in 2018.
After the charges were brought, then-local government minister Stirling Hinchliffe sacked the council, arguing it could not function effectively.
Following the dropping of the charges, the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) called for the councillors to be compensated and a public apology issued.
LGAQ president Mark Jamieson has welcomed the inquiry.
"Lives, reputations and careers have been ruined and a duly elected council wrongly dismissed," Mr Jamieson said.
"The LGAQ has been resolute in its call for an inquiry to ensure this travesty of justice is not swept under the carpet and we thank the PCCC for its decision."
Mr Smith is still facing charges in relation to other matters.
On Wednesday, Mr Smith was committed to face trial on the charges.
Mr Smith denies the allegations.
The PCCC is an all-party committee that oversees the CCC's performance and activities and deals with complaints about the CCC.
