NEW YORK _ A day after pitching six scoreless innings, Yankees starter CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Monday due to right knee inflammation.
Almost exactly a year ago, the veteran lefty landed on the DL due to the same ailment.
The Yankees have recalled both right-handed reliever George Kontos and infielder Ronald Torreyes before Monday's makeup game against the Mets at Yankee Stadium, with first baseman Luke Voit optioned back to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Sabathia has been managing an arthritic right knee for several seasons, pitching with a brace and receiving a series of scheduled lubricant injections throughout the season.
Sabathia, 38, did not complain of any discomfort following Sunday's 7-2 win against the Rangers.
Last year on Aug. 8 at Toronto, Sabathia exited a game after three innings due to right knee pain and was placed on the DL, missing one turn.
Kontos arrived at the Stadium well before Monday's scheduled first pitch.
"I remember Mo's 602nd save, that's probably the most prominent memory," Kontos said of his first tour with the Yankees, seven games in 2011.
Kontos was traded in spring training of 2012 to the San Francisco Giants for catcher Chris Stewart.
The Yankees reacquired Kontos from the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 4 for cash considerations.
"I grew up in this organization," said Kontos, who was a combined 2-3 with a 4.68 ERA this season for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Indians. "They're in a postseason hunt and I'm looking to contribute to that in any way I can."
