CBSE re-evaluation chaos leaves students racing against foreign admission deadlines

Delays in the CBSE re-evaluation and verification process are creating uncertainty for students seeking admission to foreign universities as well as those aspiring to secure seats in IITs, NITs and IIITs, according to a report by Swati Shinde Gole in The Times of India (TOI).

Students across the country have raised concerns over alleged discrepancies in their Class 12 board examination scores, with many claiming that technical issues linked to CBSE's On-Screen Marking (OSM) system have affected their results.

According to TOI, students have reported problems including blurred answer-sheet scans, allegedly unchecked responses, missing pages and technical glitches during the re-evaluation process. As a result, several students are awaiting revised marks while facing admission and scholarship deadlines in India and abroad.

Foreign University Offers Face Uncertainty

As per the TOI report, students whose overseas admissions and scholarships are at risk because universities require final board marks before confirming enrolment.

A student from Pune told Gole that a Canadian university withdrew a scholarship linked to Class 12 performance after the student's final marks were lower than expected. Another student from Mumbai said admission to an engineering programme in Singapore could be jeopardised if the re-evaluation process is not completed before the university's deadline.

Parents also expressed concerns about the financial impact of the delays. One parent told TOI that a UK university scholarship offered to his daughter depended on achieving a specific aggregate percentage. A disputed score in one subject could now result in significantly higher education costs or the loss of admission altogether.

IIT and NIT Admissions Also Affected

The issue is also affecting students targeting premier engineering institutions in India. TOI reported that some candidates who qualified in JEE Advanced fear losing eligibility for IIT admissions because their current board examination scores fall short of the mandatory 75% aggregate requirement.

Students and coaching mentors quoted in the report argued that unresolved evaluation disputes could prevent deserving candidates from securing admissions despite strong entrance examination performances.

Many students have also complained about difficulties accessing photocopies of answer sheets and submitting verification requests through the CBSE portal while counselling schedules continue to move forward.

CBSE Extends Deadline

Amid the concerns, CBSE on Friday extended the deadline for submission of applications for verification and re-evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets until June 7 after technical issues affected the portal for several days, according to the TOI report.

IIT Roorkee announced that students can participate in counselling rounds and submit revised mark sheets later if their scores are updated following the re-evaluation process.

Students have urged authorities to ensure that genuine evaluation errors are corrected before admissions and scholarship opportunities are lost, as quoted by TOI. They have also sought provisional admission arrangements while re-evaluation requests are being processed.
