CBS Sports ranks Ryan Day as one of the elite coaches in the country

We knew it was just a matter of time. We weren’t the only ones of course, but we were filleted mightily when ranking Ryan Day as one of the best college football coaches when he immediately took the baton from Urban Meyer at Ohio State. We feel vindicated because Day has turned out to be everything we thought he was.

Now, the needle is starting to point up with the national perception as well. Almost every ranking of top college coaches now has Day among the best, and CBS Sports’ latest is no different.

Tom Fornelli got with his colleagues at CBS Sports and voted on the top college football coaches among the Power Five conferences. They have Day up among the elite, this after taking a wait-and-see approach with him at No. 10 before last season.

So how far up did CBS Sports move Day, and what does Fornelli say about the rising star?

What Fornelli Says

“I had been one of the voters holding Day back last season because I took a more patient approach. I felt that Day had inherited a pretty nice program from Urban Meyer, and I wanted to see how he maintained it. Well, two playoff berths and a title game loss later, and I’d say he’s doing pretty well. Hell, you could say he’s doing some things better than Meyer. Ohio State is easily one of the three best programs in the country, and Day has only made that more obvious since taking over.”

By the way, the three coaches ahead of Day according to Fornelli are Lincoln Riley, Dabo Swinney, and Nick Saban. Not sure we agree with Riley being ahead of Day, but it’s hard to argue against the other two at this point.
