CBS Sports names Ohio State’s Justin Fields best college football quarterback playmaker

Nobody needs to tell Ohio State fans and coaches how dynamic quarterback Justin Fields can be. He gets labeled a dual-threat quarterback, and that certainly applies, but it’s his ability to sling the ball around the football field that sets everything up.

It’s hard to believe that Fields put up some similar numbers to what Dwayne Haskins did just a season before, all with just a few months to learn a new offense and get acclimated to a new culture in Columbus. Truth be known, his numbers on the ground would have probably been better had he not been banged up part of the year.

He should be 100 percent healthy heading into this fall, so look for a more dangerous attack on the ground to go with what he can do through the air.

Others around the country have taken notice too. In fact, CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee named the best playmaker at every position entering the 2020 season, and he singled out Fields as the best guy to watch under center.

Next … What Sallee says about Fields

What Sallee says:

Hot-shot quarterbacks need to play in systems that highlight their skills in a wide variety of ways. No system does it better, and no player has better skills, than Ohio State and Fields. The junior threw for 3,273 yards, rushed for 484 more and totaled 51 touchdowns. He went to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist and led his team to the College Football Playoff in his first season as a starting quarterback. He did all of that despite heading to the bench with big leads multiple times during the 2019 season. Now that Fields is entrenched under center and coach Ryan Day has championship-experience, expect Fields to flirt with 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in 2020 — provided he plays a full four quarters most of the time.”
