There were several mistakes made by the Jacksonville Jaguars’ front office in 2019 but the biggest probably was the signing of Nick Foles. They didn’t get their money’s worth as Foles sustained a misfortunate collarbone injury Week 1 and was benched during the second half of the season (Week 14). By the end of the season, he only registered four total starts which is not what fans were hoping for after he signed a four-year, $88 million deal.
Due to the lack of time he saw on the field not matching the huge payday he received last March, Foles was listed as a runner-up in the least valuable acquisitions category of CBS Sports’ annual contract awards. Still, one player managed to win the award over him and that was receiver Antonio Brown, who spent one game with the New England Patriots before being released.
Foles’ acquisition was one that some fans questioned in March because of the uncertainty of him as a full-time starter. The team could’ve also landed a significantly cheaper option like Teddy Bridgewater or Tyrod Taylor but insisted they wanted to make a statement to the locker room by getting Foles and paying him like a franchise quarterback. However, as those fans predicted the contract burned the franchise and it was partly what cost Tom Coughlin his job as a front office executive.
Heading forward it will now be on general manager Dave Caldwell to figure out Nick Foles’ fate, but it’s hard to imagine him regaining the job from Gardner Minshew II. The young rookie registered a 6-6 record as a starter and arguably had the best rookie season of any quarterback in the 2019 class, so chances are Foles could be traded or an expensive No. 2 quarterback over being the Jags’ starter.
