In their run to the NFC East championship in 2020, the Washington Football Team received surprisingly strong play from their offensive line. Entering the season, there were questions on the left side, but veterans Cornelius Lucas and Wes Schweitzer stabilized the unit.
One spot that wasn’t in question last season was right guard. That’s former No. 5 overall pick Brandon Scherff’s position.
Scherff, who entered 2020 having made three Pro Bowls, made another Pro Bowl in 2020. But, Scherff also made first-team All-Pro, which meant he was the first Washington player in the Daniel Snyder era to receive that honor.
Washington placed the franchise tag on Scherff for the second consecutive season in the offseason and has just over three weeks remaining to sign him to a long-term deal. If Washington and Scherff can’t agree to terms by the deadline, this will likely be his last season in D.C.
As for 2021, CBS recently ranked the top 10 interior offensive linemen in the NFL, and, unsurprisingly, Scherff placed pretty high on that list, coming in at No. 4:
Once we start getting into the All-Pro players, there’s really not much debate about whether or not they should be top 5 and you could make the case for any one of them being higher on this list as we close in toward the No. 1 spot. With Scherff, he was a top 10 guard as a run-blocker and in pass protection last season. Dating to 2018, Scherff has allowed just five sacks in 1,218 pass-blocking snaps. In 2020, Scherff surrendered one sack and was called for just one penalty, adding to his reputation of being one of the most well-rounded linemen in the league. The only thing holding Scherff back from being at the top of this last has been his lack of durability. The 29-year-old hasn’t played a full 16-game season since his second year in the league in 2016.
Scherff is the No. 3 ranked guard on the list behind No. 1 Quenton Nelson and No. 2 Zack Martin.
While Washington has reshuffled the offensive line in 2021, the right guard position will remain in good hands with Scherff.
