Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents seized over a dozen weapons and ammunition from a car attempting to travel to Mexico, authorities said.

The incident took place last Sunday when CBP agents in the Del Rio International Bridge, in Texas, conducted an inspection on a van leaving the country.

After selecting the car for inspection, officers discovered 15 weapons and 24 magazines concealed within the vehicle. The weapons and ammo were seized and Homeland Security Investigations began a criminal investigation on the matter, CBP detailed.

"A combination of officer experience, advanced technology, and tireless effort by our officers all contributed to the realization of this significant weapons seizure," said Del Rio Port Director Liliana Flores.

A few days earlier, CBP officers stationed at the Bridge of the Americas in El Paso tased a man as he tried to smuggle over 4,000 rounds of ammunition. The man in question was asked to turn off the engine for officials to conduct an inspection, but he continued driving south. Officials then deployed tire deflation devices and tased the man as he tried to roll up the windows and reach for an unknown item.

Moreover, two men were charged in April after allegedly attempting to smuggle five high-caliber sniper rifles into Mexico. They men were spotted by a Border Patrol intelligence unit that was conducting surveillance in the area. They saw two cars driving together, their drivers then stepping out and transferring "multiple bulky item" from one car to the other. Then they drove off in different directions.

Agents followed the car that had received the items as it headed toward Mexico and called on CBP officers to stop it before it could cross the borders. Agents then asked the driver if he had anything to declare, and when he said no the agents searched the vehicle and found the rifles.
