CBI probes post office deposit ‘scam’ in MP's Rewa

BHOPAL: The CBI has launched an investigation into an alleged financial fraud of close to Rs1 core at a post office in Rewa.

The central agency took up the probe after a postal audit found that large numbers of deposits had never made it to the accounts of the post office. The superintendent of post offices, Rewa division, filed a complaint with CBI against postal assistant Ashish Kumar Singh.

It is alleged that Singh, while working as sub-post master at Majhauli sub post office from August 18, 2015 to June 6, 2020, misappropriated over Rs 94.6 lakh in government funds and caused loss to the postal department. The fraud was committed in146 accounts under Sukanya Yojana, Monthly Income Scheme, National Savings Scheme, Recurring Deposit Scheme and Kisan Vikas Patra.

Singh is alleged to have opened these accounts after receiving deposits from policy holders but did not make entries in the official accounts. After initial investigation, CBI has booked Singh under Prevention of Corruption Act.
