CBI names former Treasury advisor to succeed director general Carolyn Fairbairn

The CBI has appointed former Treasury adviser Tony Danker as its new director-general.

He will succeed Carolyn Fairbairn when she steps down at the UK's biggest business lobbying organisation in November. She had been due to leave in September after completing her five-year term but agreed to stay on through the coronavirus crisis.

Danker is chief executive of Be the Business, a body formed by bosses in 2017 in a bid to improve productivity. He is a former Guardian News & Media executive and McKinsey alumnus who has served as a policy adviser in the Cabinet Office and Treasury.

He said: "It is an honour to be asked to lead the CBI, which is doing vital work in response to Covid-19.Meanwhile, Be the Business is also working to support thousands of businesses around the country through challenging times, helping them emerge resilient."

Fairbairn said: "The CBI is fully devoted to supporting businesses through this period and I am committed to leading our team on this work until I step down in November."
