CBD oil products recalled due to 'unsafe levels' of drug's psychoactive element

A VARIETY of cannabis oil products sold in Ireland were recalled yesterday (THU) due to "unsafe levels" of the drug's psychoactive element.

THC - or delta‐9‐tetrahydrocannabinol - was detected in a wide range of CBD food products and supplements.

Food safety chiefs are warning the public not to buy or consume the affected 16 batches.

However, it's understood "no immediate dangers" will arise if they are consumed.

A Food Safety Authority of Ireland spokesman said: "The implicated batches of CBD foods and food supplements contain unsafe levels of delta‐9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) based on the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) acute reference dose.

"But there are no immediate dangers associated with the consumption of these products."

He added: "Environmental health officers (EHOs) are requested to check food businesses to determine if the implicated batches of the below CBD products are available for sale.

"If found, EHOs should seize, remove and detain the products off site; also oversee a recall, ensuring a point-of-sale notice is displayed in store and on websites if sold online."

A wide range of brands are recalling several CBD - short for cannabidiol - products including oil, spray, bubble gum and drops.

Businesses and online retailers are being asked to withdraw the products from sale.

A statement said: "Food businesses, including online retailers, currently selling the implicated batches of the CBD products must immediately remove them from sale and contact their supervising environmental health officer (or foodincidents@fsai.ie) so that any remaining stock can be removed.

"Food businesses that have sold the implicated batches of the below CBD products to consumers must display a point-of-sale notice in store and on websites if sold online, to inform consumers that the implicated batches of these CBD products are being recalled and the reason why."
