CBD cafe Mary Jane’s in Bristol closes permanently less than a year after opening

A CBD cafe in Bristol has closed permanently, less than a year after opening.

Mary-Jane’s opened on Whiteladies Road in May 2019, selling a range of food and drinks infused with cannabidiol (CBD) as well as oils and other products containing the ingredient to take home.

But today (March 19) its founder Jon Antoniou announced the cafe has closed its doors for the final time, due to a challenging winter being compounded by fears over coronavirus.

He said: “We’d like to thank Bristolians for the warm welcome they have given us since we opened in May last year and all our customers who have been a pleasure to meet and serve.

“The high street is going through a challenging time in general but unfortunately, having just about survived a quiet winter with storm after storm battering our city, we are now facing the challenge of not being able to serve customers for an unknown period while the coronavirus threat is in our city.

“This has sadly led to us taking the decision to close our coffee shop in Clifton.”

Jon added the shop enjoyed a “huge uptake in the number of customers” in recent weeks due to the perceived benefits of taking CBD, a naturally non-psychoactive substance, on the immune system.

But this surge was ultimately not enough to keep the business afloat, he said, before warning “this will not be the first or last high street casualty of the virus”.

The company still intends to continue selling its CBD oil on its website.
