CBBC star Mya-Lecia Naylor died after hanging herself at her family home

CBBC child star Mya-Lecia Naylor died by misadventure after hanging herself at her family home, an inquest has ruled.

Mya-Lecia's mother Zena discovered her at their South London home on April 7 this year.

Emergency services were called to the address at around 10am on Sunday April 7, to reports of a teenage girl in cardiac arrest.

16-year-old Mya-Lecia was pronounced dead at Croydon University Hospital shortly after 11.30am.

The talented actress was due to sit her GCSEs that summer but her parents had recently had a phone call from the school saying her grades were lower than expected.

Her father, Martin Naylor, told South London Coroners Court: "She had not been her normal self ... she was stressed about her exams.

"She knew she needed to get on with her revision and she had plans scheduled out for her revision."

Mya-Lecia had also been grounded and banned from attending a party, and had spent the night before her death watching a film with her family that included a scene of suicide.

Mr Naylor who saw the teenager on the morning of her death, believes it was a "silly mistake", despite her exam stress.

He said: "I honestly believe she was just making some sort of point. I genuinely believe she did not mean to do it. It was a silly spur of the moment thing. She clearly had plans for the future."

Assistant Coroner, Toby Watkin concluded that the teenager "did not intend to end her own life" and concluded her death was by misadventure.

A toxicology report revealed no evidence of drugs or alcohol in My-Lecia's system, and searches of her phones, laptop, and social media accounts did not present anything suspicious.

News of Mya-Lecia's death was confirmed by the BBC back in April.

They said in a statement: "We are so sorry to have to tell you that Mya-Lecia, who you will know from Millie Inbetween and Almost Never has, very sadly, died.

"Mya-Lecia was a much loved part of the BBC Children’s family, and a hugely talented actress, singer and dancer. We will miss her enormously and we are sure that you will want to join us in sending all our love to her family and friends."

Representatives for the teenage actress said at the time: "It is with the deepest sorrow we have to announce that on Sunday 7th April Mya-Lecia Naylor, very sadly, died.

"Mya-Lecia was hugely talented and a big part of A&J, we will miss her greatly.

"Our love and thoughts are with all her family and friends at this difficult time."

Mya-Lecia starred in CBBC show Millie Inbetween as Fran, as well the channel's Almost Never.

She also appeared in BBC show Absolutely Fabulous as Jane in 2004.

News of her passing in April was met by an outpouring of support from her former co-stars.

Former I'm A Celebrity star Emily Atack wrote: "So shocked and sad to hear about lovely Mya-Lecia Naylor.

"She was a beautiful and talented girl. A complete joy to be around on the set of Almost Never.

"Sending all my love to her family & friends. Rest in peace beautiful girl."

While dad-of four Peter Andre paid tribute: "So sad. Terrible. Thoughts with family."

Alice Webb, director of BBC Children's said the team were "distraught and so terribly sad" about Miss Naylor's death.

She said: "She was so hugely popular with our audience. A very talented actress, dancer and singer. A real role model for her young fans."
