CB David Amerson released by Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals announced a surprising roster move after the conclusion of mandatory minicamp. They released veteran cornerback David Amerson.

Amerson was signed in the second half of last season and appeared in six games, starting the final five of the season. He had one interception and broke up two other passes.

It is a curious move for this time of year. Amerson was getting a look as a starting cornerback and figured to be in the mix for when Patrick Peterson is suspended the first six weeks of the year.

Typically, a player with his experience and with a chance to start would continue with the team through training camp. Inexperienced players on the back of the roster often get cut this time of year, not players with 61 career starts.

With his release, it leaves Trumaine Brock and rookie Byron Murphy as the frontrunners to start in Peterson’s place for the first six weeks of the regular season.

The move leaves an open roster spot. The Cardinals did not announce a signing to replace Amerson, so that is something to watch in the next couple of days.
