CB Bradley Roby could bring more smarts to the Texans’ secondary

The Houston Texans signed cornerback Bradley Roby to inject youth and experience to their secondary.

The former Denver Bronco may also bring some intelligence that never hurts a back end that has to take on the likes of Indianapolis Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton and the Tennessee Titans’ Corey Davis.

Through two days of training camp with his new team, the 27-year-old Roby has made an impression on coach Bill O’Brien.

“Robs [Roby] had two good days here to start off,” O’Brien told reporters Friday at Methodist Training Center. “Smart player. He was here in early training camp [mandatory minicamp], did some good things there. So, really, he’s been here for four practices now. Smart player, talented player.”

Roby replaces defensive back Kareem Jackson, who was a jack-of-all-trades for the Texans secondary in 2018. When safety Andre Hal’s availability was compromised early with a cancer diagnosis, Jackson moved to safety. When rookie Justin Reid excelled, Jackson moved back to corner to help out as injuries swept through the position group.

Now, Roby will have to replace Jackson, at least as a corner, and he has the talent to do so.

Said O’Brien: “Good movement skills, he can run. Good communication skills. He’s seen a lot. He’s played a lot of football. So, we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do to help our team.”

Roby has seven career interceptions, but does have 213 solo tackles in his five-year career with Denver.
