INDEPENDENCE, Ohio _ Cavaliers security is reviewing footage to see if an identification is possible of the fan who racially taunted San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena.
Mills was at the free-throw line with 2:29 remaining in the Spurs' 110-94 victory when on the ABC broadcast a fan can be heard yelling, "Hey, Jamaican dog, they want their bobsledder back. Hey Mills, Jamaica just called, they want their bobsledder back!"
Mills is a native of Australia who is black and has Aboriginal roots. He wears his hair in partial dreadlocks.
When alerted to the insensitive comments via social media, Mills said on Twitter, "I am a proud Islander. Like my Jamaican Brothers, me & my family in the islands of the Torres Strait have experienced racial slurs for decades. Hope your efforts will enlighten this confused, hateful fan. #BlackHistoryMonth."
On Monday, Cavs fan @cleveland _ cam apologized to Mills via Twitter.
"Hey @Patty _ Mills, I'd like to apologize for the fan who made racist remarks towards you," @cleveland _ cam wrote. "That's not what we're about in CLE & I don't want you to think that we are like that. My dad & I were talking at the game how much we respected your hard work to become a great bball player."
