Cavani and De Gea good but Maguire bad: Manchester United fans' player ratings vs Newcastle

Only David de Gea and Edinson Cavani came away with any credit from Manchester United supporters following Monday's abject display vs Newcastle United.

United were seriously lucky to come away from St. James' Park with a point after they were outplayed by a Newcastle side that, despite losing their two best players to injury and being 19th in the table, played with vigour, bravery and quality as they should have won the match.

Allan Saint-Maximin was a constant thorn in the United back-line and he gave the hosts the lead with a sweeping strike into the top corner after just seven minutes.

The Magpies completely dominated the game and only a string of fine saves from De Gea kept them in the match before a returning Cavani pounced on a rebound to drag the team level.

That didn't change the momentum, though, as Newcastle had plenty more chances to win the game after Jacob Murphy hit the post and De Gea was forced into yet more excellent stops.

The match ended 1-1 with United knowing they got away with it after a very poor performance which has reflected in the fans' player ratings, as collated by MEN Sport.

De Gea unsurprisingly was rated United's best player at 8.2 after making no less than eight saves as his personal form continues to be his best in years.

Veteran striker Cavani then earned a 7 after his goalscoring return from over a month on the sidelines with a tendon issue but it wasn't pretty reading for the rest of the team.

Jadon Sancho and Diogo Dalot were the next highest, with 5.4 and 5.3 respectively, but no one else managed to get over a 5.

Fred, whose passing was awful, and a constantly caught out Harry Maguire finished bottom of the pile with 3.4 each but Marcus Rashford finished only a bit higher on 3.9, as his poor form continues.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jason Greenwood, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes all earned low scoring 4s as well on what was a bad night for United.

United fans' player ratings vs Newcastle:

  • De Gea - 8.2
  • Cavani - 7
  • Sancho - 5.4
  • Dalot - 5.3
  • Telles - 4.8
  • Matic - 4.7
  • Fernandes - 4.4
  • McTominay - 4.4
  • Greenwood - 4.3
  • Varane - 4.3
  • Ronaldo - 4.2
  • Rashford - 3.9
  • Maguire - 3.4
  • Fred - 3.4
